EASY Routines for Infants
As parents, one of the most daunting challenges we face is establishing a consistent routine with our infants. Sleepless nights, feeding woes, and erratic schedules can take a toll on both the baby and the parents. However, I am a strong believer in establishing a routine so there’s consistency and expectations for transitions throughout the day. There's a method that can help alleviate these issues and bring much-needed structure to your baby's day - the Easy Method. In this blog post, we'll explore how embracing the Easy Method can create a harmonious routine for your infant, promoting better sleep patterns, happier babies, and more relaxed parents.
What is the Easy Method?
The Easy Method, short for Eat, Activity, Sleep, and You time, is a routine designed to cater to an infant's natural rhythm and needs. Developed by renowned pediatrician Dr. Tracy Hogg, this approach focuses on creating a balanced cycle that allows your baby to eat well, play actively, have adequate sleep, and also ensures parents get essential "you" time for self-care.
Eat - Feeding Your Little One
A fundamental aspect of the Easy Method is to feed your baby upon waking. Whether you are breastfeeding or formula-feeding, start the day and each awake time with a good full feeding. I breastfed and recommend a scale to weigh your baby and track how many ounces they drank for each feeding. This practice ensures that your baby gets the nourishment needed and sets a positive tone for the rest of the routine.
Remember to burp baby 1-3 times during the feeding and burp again at the end to get out any trapped air. This will help to prevent gas from building up in the intestines. If a baby has gas, it can upset them.
Activity - Playful Stimulation
After feeding, engage your little one in gentle activities that encourage development and exploration. I start off with social interaction and facial expressions to give time for the milk to settle and avoid any spit ups. Then I lay them down on their back and eventually transition to tummy time.
Tummy time, interactive toys, and soft music are great ways to stimulate your baby's senses and encourage healthy growth. Keeping these activities light and enjoyable helps prevent overstimulation and prepares your infant for the next step - sleep.
Sleep - The Importance of Timing of Naps
Naptime is crucial for your baby's physical and mental well-being. The Easy Method emphasizes putting your baby down for a nap when they show signs of tiredness, rather than letting them become overtired. Following a consistent sleep schedule helps regulate your infant's internal clock and promotes better nighttime sleep.
You - Self-Care for Parents & Families
In the midst of caring for a baby, it's vital for parents to find time for themselves, and also spend quality time with any other older children in the house. The Easy Method encourages parents to take short breaks during their baby's naptime or enlist the help of a family member or friend. Remember, well-rested and relaxed parents can provide better care for their little ones.
Benefits of the Easy Method
Predictability: The Easy Method creates a predictable routine for your baby, allowing them to feel secure and comfortable with their daily activities.
Improved Sleep: By responding promptly to your baby's sleep cues, you can avoid overstimulation and prevent sleep disturbances, leading to more restful nights for both baby and parents.
Enhanced Bonding: Engaging in one-on-one time during the activity phase strengthens the bond between you and your baby, fostering a sense of trust and security.
Emotional Regulation: A consistent routine can help regulate your baby's emotions and reduce fussiness, making for a happier and calmer baby.
