Embracing New Skills: Family Hairstylist
As the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, we were all forced to adapt to new challenges and uncertainties. Little did I know that amidst the chaos, I would discover a hidden talent that would not only save me money but also fill me with a sense of accomplishment and pride. Today, I share with you my journey of making the intentional decision to cut my son and husband's hair during the pandemic and how it transformed me into a confident family hairstylist.
As the world went into lockdown, many of us found ourselves grappling with numerous challenges, including financial uncertainties. Trips to the hair salon were no longer an option, and the prospect of having unkempt hair became a real concern. While some might have decided to let their hair grow out, I saw this as an opportunity to take matters into my own hands – literally.
With no prior experience in hair cutting, I must admit, the thought of taking scissors to my loved ones' hair was daunting. Nonetheless, the determination to learn a new skill and save money motivated me to give it a try. Armed with YouTube tutorials and some basic hair cutting tools, I nervously embarked on this hair-cutting adventure.
The first time I picked up the scissors, I was filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation. As I began trimming my son's hair, I reminded myself that it would grow back, and this was a learning experience for both of us. Although my initial attempts were far from perfect, the support and encouragement from my family kept me going.
As weeks turned into months, I persisted in my newfound role as the family hairstylist. I spent time watching tutorials, learning about different hair textures and styles, and understanding the art of blending and layering. Each haircut presented a new challenge, but I began to notice gradual improvements in my technique.
Beyond the monetary savings and acquired skill, cutting my son and husband's hair became a bonding experience like no other. It allowed us to spend quality time together, trust each other, and share moments of laughter and understanding. This shared experience strengthened our family bond, and I came to realize that sometimes the simplest activities can bring us closer together.
As the pandemic eventually waned, I had a choice to make. I could go back to relying on professional hairstylists, or I could continue honing my newly acquired skill. The sense of pride and accomplishment I felt after each successful haircut made the decision an easy one. I decided to carry on as the family hairstylist.
Not only did my decision to cut my family's hair save us money, but it also gave me a tremendous boost in confidence. Knowing that I could master a skill I had never imagined attempting before was empowering. Every time I picked up those scissors, I felt a sense of control over my life and a reminder that I could adapt and grow even in the face of challenges.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected changes to our lives, and it was up to us to find creative solutions to the obstacles it presented. Cutting my son and husband's hair was an intentional decision born out of necessity, but it became so much more than that. It transformed into an opportunity for personal growth, bonding, and empowerment.
Today, I continue to cut my family's hair with pride, cherishing the memories of those early pandemic days and embracing the ongoing journey of learning and improving.
